Support Groups
Homeschoolers have created networks of support to provide a way to make friends, get ideas and information, and to offer positive socialization opportunties to their children. You can join in! There are many groups to choose from, many with specific affiliations, like Christian groups or unschoolers' groups. Some are eclectic, inclusive, and open to anyone. Whatever your interest, you are sure to find other like-minded parents. And if you don't find what you are looking for, we've put together tips for starting your own group.
Local & State Groups
Support groups offer a way for those interested in homeschooling or new to home education to get information and support. They also offer opportunities for social activities, group learning, and networking. Find a support group near you in Michigan.

Co-Ops

Umbrella/Cover Schools
An umbrella or cover school provides an alternative way for parents to fulfill governmental educational guidelines and requirements. Most offer a variety of services, which can include curricula, social activities, field trips, standardized testing, portfolio reviews, evaluations, and graduation materials, including diplomas. While umbrella schools do tend to the needs of homeschoolers, they are considered a type of private school in most states.
Resource Centers
Homeschool resource centers offer classes, materials, field trips, and other activities for parents and children alike. They are great ways to get new information, engage in group activities, and network with other homeschoolers.
Public School Programs
Public schools are increasing offering programs to appeal to homeschooling families, from classes to educational materials to computer and distance learning. SEMI-WTM
This discussion group serves homeschooling parents in SE Michigan, providing online communication and connections with other WTM/Classical families or those interested in implementing WTM/Classical ideas. The group offers a forum for discussion of classical education as well as notice, discussion and planning of events in the SE Michigan area.

The Homeschool HUB
The Homeschool HUB is a non-profit educational organization and Michiana's homeschooling resource center. This organization provides programs and field trips, and a communication network among homeschool families in the Michiana area. They offer classes and seminars, field trips, games days, play days, community service projects, a sports program, and much more.

Home School Blessings in Michigan
This email group is for Michigan Christian homeschooling families who strive to keep God as the center of their family. From curriculum methods to our daily walk, all areas of life are encouraged to be discussed.
Michigan Unschoolers
This group is for families in Michigan that Unschool or are relaxed homeschoolers. This group is not for discussion of curriculum or how to get kids to "do school", rather it's a forum to discuss unschooling, share our unschooling experiences, ask questions or just explore the concept.

The NICHE homeschool support group provides a comfortable, enriching environment for home educators to meet, inform, encourage, and enjoy one another. They offer information, support, and networking opportunities for homeschooling parents and children.

This group is for child-initiated learning with peers (although parents can participate in learning too) in the Ann Arbor area.
Catholic Homeschoolers of Wisconsin
This is a private list for leaders of Catholic homeschool support groups within the state of Wisconsin (or in border towns in Illinois, Minnesota, Iowa, and UP Michigan). It is a place to exchange information that may be of interest to Catholic homeschoolers throughout the state. It is also a forum for the dissemination of statewide invitations to various Catholic homeschooling events, such as conferences, graduations, dances, etc.

Christian Home Educators Support System (CHESS)
Christian Home Educators Support System (CHESS) is a Lansing based homeschool organization that reaches out to serve all mid-Michgan homeschoolers. They are currently serving over 160 families from St. Johns to Jackson, Portland to Perry, Charlotte to Howell, and everywhere in between. CHESS seeks to provide support, encouragement, resources, information, activities, and other services that will nurture Christ-like character in homeschooling children and parents, alike.
Christian Home Educators of the Blue Water Area (CHEBWA)
Blue Water Home School exists to provide information and support to home educators in Port Huron, Michigan and the surrounding communities. This website is home to the C.H.E.B.W.A. Support Group and the EXCEL Co-op and also contains information on local classes, social events, and homeschooling resources in the area.
Homeschoolers United (Homeschool HUB) Email List
Homeschoolers United is a group of homeschoolers in southwest Michigan and northern Indiana that are starting a new kind of homeschool group. They are a non-profit corporation with a mission to be an information clearinghouse for local homeschool groups and individual homeschoolers, and to provide a place for meetings and enrichment opportunites. This is their email list designed to facilitate communication between members.
LAUNCH (Livingston Area UNschoolers and eClectic Homeschoolers)
LAUNCH (Livingston Area UNschoolers and eClectic Homeschoolers) is a secular support group for unschoolers and eclectic homeschoolers in and around Livingston County, Michigan. This non-religious group meets for volunteer activities, field trips and other gatherings as arranged by its members. Most of their activities occur in the Howell area.
